Dow-style structure: what would change your view?
Before calling a dip a bargain, ask whether your uptrend still exists.
Use a fixed swing rule to describe crypto structure and its invalidation.
Dow-style trend reading starts with successive highs and lows. Rising confirmed highs and lows support an uptrend description; falling ones support a downtrend. Mixed sequences may deserve a range or uncertain label.
Choose one timeframe and define confirmation. If a pivot needs two later candles, you can mark it as confirmed only after those candles exist. This delay is part of the rule.
Separate description from action. Breaking a higher low challenges that particular sequence; it does not automatically establish a new downtrend or provide a short entry.
Crypto venues and candle boundaries differ. Record the pair, exchange and timezone. Traditional Dow ideas about stock averages should not be copied as if every crypto token were an equivalent index.
Let’s work through it
- Fix the venue, timeframe and pivot rule.
- Mark confirmed highs and lows in chronological order.
- Write the event that would challenge the current description.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
Fictional price swings make highs at 44 and 47, with confirmed lows at 42 and 45. A later close at 43 breaks the latest 45 low. The previous uptrend description needs review; selling at 43 is not automatically justified.
Easy mistakes to watch for
- Confirming a pivot with candles that had not yet formed.
- Changing timeframe until a preferred trend appears.
- Treating a structure break as a complete trading plan.
Keep in mind
Later chart labels can make a trend look easier to see than it was in real time.
Your turn
Hide later candles and label ten confirmed pivots; keep the original labels when revealing the next section.
A quick check before we move on
What does the close below 45 establish in the example?
- The latest higher-low sequence has been challenged
- A guaranteed new downtrend
- A certain profitable short
Check answer
The latest higher-low sequence has been challenged It contradicts that specific sequence. A new trend and an executable setup require additional defined evidence.
