Portfolio concentration and correlations
Ten tokens can all depend on the same market mood. Count shared risks, not only the names in your wallet.
Measure shared exposure rather than counting token names.
A portfolio is the collection of positions and cash claims you hold. Ten tokens do not automatically create ten independent sources of risk. They may depend on the same market sentiment, chain, issuer, custodian or collateral asset.
Correlation describes how returns move together over a selected sample. It can change with timeframe and market stress. Historical low correlation is not a promise that two assets will protect each other in a crisis; common liquidity needs can make them fall together.
Map both price and operational concentration. Assets on one exchange share a custody dependency; several applications may share one oracle or bridge. A risk map helps explain what one failure could affect, without assuming that spreading balances mechanically solves the problem.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
Hypothetical: three positions each worth 100 all fall 20% together. Combined loss is 60. Adding more token names with the same exposure would not reduce that percentage loss. A separate cash claim may have its own issuer risk.
Keep in mind
Diversification can reduce some concentration, but cannot eliminate market or custody losses.
Your turn
Draw a fictional portfolio and connect each position to chain, custodian and main price drivers.
A quick check before we move on
