Records, local rules and changing information
A good record is useful long after the chart is closed. Keep the evidence and check which local rules currently apply.
Keep an audit trail and verify current official guidance before acting.
An exchange export is useful but may not describe your entire activity across wallets and venues. Preserve dates, timezones, asset quantities, transaction identifiers, fees, counterparties where known and the fiat valuation method. Distinguish a transfer between your own wallets from a purchase or disposal.
Legal status, permitted funding methods, reporting and tax treatment depend on location and activity, and can change. Read current official notices, their effective dates and later amendments. A historical notice or a foreign regulator's page cannot establish today's rules for every Sri Lankan reader.
Use the records to ask precise questions of a qualified local professional or relevant authority. Keep recovery phrases and private keys out of reports and screenshots. This lesson does not classify your transactions for tax or recommend a workaround for payment restrictions.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
You buy 10 fictional tokens for USD 50, pay USD 1 fee and later move them to your own wallet with a network fee. Log each event separately rather than treating the wallet transfer as a second purchase.
Keep in mind
A platform accepting your payment does not establish that the activity or payment method complies with your local requirements.
Your turn
Create a fictional three-event ledger and find an official notice; record its date, jurisdiction and whether a later update exists.
A quick check before we move on
What should you check before relying on an old legal summary?
- Current official guidance, effective dates and amendments
- Only whether the article has many views
- Only whether an exchange allows registration
Check answer
Current official guidance, effective dates and amendments Current applicable rules require a jurisdiction and date check. Popularity and platform access cannot establish compliance.
