Research a project critically
A confident white paper is a proposal. Compare the proposal with working code, permissions, incentives and independent evidence.
Write a falsifiable research memo instead of collecting promotional claims.
Begin with the problem a project claims to solve and who actually uses it. Separate a working service from a future roadmap. A whitepaper describes intentions or design claims; independent evidence is needed to assess implementation and adoption.
Examine architecture, governance, token rights and incentives. Who can upgrade contracts, mint supply, pause transfers or change fees? A token may provide voting rights without a claim on business revenue. Identify how users benefit and why the token is necessary, if it is.
Review security history and dependencies alongside disclosed financial information. Audits cover a scope at a point in time, not every later deployment. Keep unanswered questions visible and compare alternatives. A good research memo can conclude that evidence is insufficient, without forcing a purchase decision.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
Hypothetical: a project reports 10,000 users, but the definition counts wallet connections. Your memo marks human users as unverified, checks contract activity and asks whether incentives explain the count instead of repeating the marketing number as fact.
Keep in mind
Influencer endorsement, a listing or an audit badge does not establish investment quality.
Your turn
Write a one-page fictional memo: claim, evidence, counterargument, missing data and conditions that would invalidate the thesis.
A quick check before we move on
What is a whitepaper by itself?
- A source of claims to verify
- Proof of safe returns
- A guarantee of adoption
Check answer
A source of claims to verify Design documents require corroboration through implementation and real evidence.
