Forward test and keep a journal
Memory keeps the dramatic trades and loses the ordinary ones. A journal keeps the ordinary ones too.
Record decisions before outcomes and compare plans with execution.
Forward testing follows frozen rules on newly arriving data, ideally in a demo environment while learning. Record the setup before the outcome. This prevents a later explanation from replacing the decision you actually made.
A useful log includes timestamp and timezone, instrument, rule version, planned entry and stop, size, intended cash risk, actual fill, costs and exit reason. Add before-and-after screenshots and tag rule violations separately from valid losing trades.
Review on a fixed schedule. Compare net R results, drawdown and rule adherence; investigate whether slippage or missed signals changed the planned result. A journal should preserve errors rather than make the record look impressive. Keep original entries and date later corrections.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
A hypothetical trade planned 20 pips risk and a 40-pip target. It actually entered 2 pips worse and paid additional costs. Recording only '+2R winner' hides the difference. Recalculate from the original cash-risk definition and actual net result.
Keep in mind
Demo fills and emotions can differ from live trading. A short forward sample cannot prove a durable edge.
Your turn
Log ten consecutive demo decisions, including valid no-trades, and write one process change for the next sample.
A quick check before we move on
How should a valid losing trade be logged?
- Deleted to clean the record
- Relabelled as invalid after losing
- As a rule-following loss, distinct from an execution mistake
Check answer
As a rule-following loss, distinct from an execution mistake Separating process from outcome helps identify genuine execution problems without hiding strategy risk.
