Invalidation is an idea; a stop is an order
The chart says one thing, but the price you can actually trade may say another.
Separate analytical failure conditions from protective execution and realistic costs.
An invalidation rule states when the chart idea no longer qualifies. A protective stop is an execution instruction governed by the venue; the two are related but not interchangeable.
If your analysis waits for a candle close, do not assume the intrabar loss remains capped while waiting. A separate risk limit may require leaving before that close.
For a long position you usually buy at ask and sell at bid. Check the product’s actual trigger rules and include commission or financing where applicable.
A triggered stop may execute worse than its nominated level; a stop-limit can fail to execute. A labelled zone cannot eliminate these mechanics.
Let’s work through it
- Mark the reference before revealing the outcome.
- Separate analytical failure conditions from protective execution and realistic costs.
- Record the result and the conditions that would reject the idea.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
Suppose EUR/USD bid 1.1000, ask 1.1002. Buying at 1.1002 with sell-stop 1.0992 means 10 pips of planned price-distance, not 8 pips from the bid chart. A fill at 1.0991 makes 11 pips before commission.
Easy mistakes to watch for
- Mistaken assumption: 8 pips.
- Changing the definition after seeing the result.
- Ignoring spread, slippage or the loss limit.
Keep in mind
This is a hypothetical study, not a signal. A chart label cannot identify institutional intentions or guarantee a result; include costs and a predefined loss limit.
Your turn
Write a bid/ask entry-and-exit table and compare the chart-only distance with the executable distance.
A quick check before we move on
In the example, what is the planned distance from actual buy price 1.1002 to 1.0992?
- Always zero if the zone is valid.
- 10 pips.
- 8 pips.
Check answer
10 pips. The entry is ask 1.1002; the stop reference is 1.0992, so the difference is 0.0010 or 10 pips.
