Psychology and decision rules
The difficult moment often comes after the plan is written. Give your future stressed self a simple rule to follow.
Build observable routines for difficult decisions.
Fear, excitement and frustration are normal responses to uncertainty. The useful question is what behaviour follows them. Revenge trading tries to recover a loss quickly; FOMO chases a move because missing it feels uncomfortable.
Replace vague instructions such as 'be disciplined' with observable rules. Require a completed checklist, preserve the original risk limit and define breaks after a rule violation or loss-limit breach. A pause is a process decision, not a prediction that the next trade loses.
Judge adherence separately from profit. A rule-following loss and an impulsive win require different feedback. If the routine repeatedly fails, reduce the complexity and return to simulation. Trading performance does not measure personal worth.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
A hypothetical demo plan allows two entries per session and a break after any unplanned entry. After two losses, an attractive third signal appears. Following the plan means recording it without entry, even if it later wins. Do not rewrite the rule after the outcome.
Keep in mind
A calming routine does not make a weak strategy profitable. Never raise size to force emotional recovery.
Your turn
Write an if-then rule for chasing, revenge trading and fatigue, with one visible action for each.
A quick check before we move on
Which result shows good process?
- A planned loss taken within written limits
- An oversized impulsive winner
- Removing losing entries from the log
Check answer
A planned loss taken within written limits Process quality concerns the decision and risk controls, not whether one random outcome happened to win.
