Translate SMC ideas into testable rules
A label such as “order block” is only a starting point. Turn the label into something another person could mark the same way.
Replace persuasive labels with reproducible chart definitions.
Smart Money Concepts, SMC, is an umbrella for discretionary ideas such as structure breaks, order blocks and fair value gaps. Definitions vary between educators. Learn the vocabulary, but ask what another person could measure from the same chart.
Define swing confirmation, whether a break requires a wick or close, the zone's boundaries and its expiry. A three-candle gap rule can be measured; claiming that every gap must fill cannot be assumed. Record unfilled and invalidated zones too.
Price shapes alone do not prove institutional intent or reveal actual unexecuted orders. A descriptive zone can still be tested as a hypothesis without the story being established. Keep execution, risk and sample selection rules separate from the label.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
Hypothetically define a bullish three-candle gap when candle 3's low, 1.1020, exceeds candle 1's high, 1.1010. The zone is 10 pips wide. State whether touching it, closing through it or ten elapsed candles invalidates your rule.
Keep in mind
A compelling chart narrative is not measured evidence of profitability. Avoid selecting only filled gaps after the fact.
Your turn
Give your written zone rule to another learner and compare markings before viewing outcomes.
A quick check before we move on
What makes an SMC rule testable?
- A chart containing only winners
- Explicit definitions, failures and advance execution rules
- The words institutional and high probability
Check answer
Explicit definitions, failures and advance execution rules Reproducible definitions let others check the hypothesis and count unsuccessful cases.
