Trends, ranges and swing structure
Before naming a trend, point to the highs and lows that make you say it. Labels come after observations.
Describe price structure with rules that can be applied without future knowledge.
A trend is a directional pattern over a specified observation window. Rising swing highs and lows can describe an uptrend; falling ones can describe a downtrend. A range describes repeated movement within an area, but its boundaries are estimates, not permanent walls.
Define how a swing becomes confirmed. For example, a pivot rule requiring two later candles cannot identify the pivot in real time until those candles exist. Marking it earlier in a test uses information that was not yet available.
Structure depends on timeframe. A falling five-minute move can sit inside a rising daily trend. State the timeframe and rule instead of using labels as universal facts. A break of one swing may indicate change or temporary noise; a useful hypothesis includes what would invalidate it and when to wait.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
Hypothetical confirmed lows are 1.0800, 1.0830 and 1.0860, with rising highs between them. This supports an uptrend description for that window; a later drop below 1.0860 challenges the latest higher-low sequence.
Keep in mind
Recognising a historical trend does not guarantee continuation or establish a profitable entry.
Your turn
Choose one swing-confirmation rule and label a demo chart chronologically, covering candles to the right as you proceed.
A quick check before we move on
When is a pivot requiring two later candles confirmed?
- After those two candles have formed
- At the pivot candle's opening
- Whenever the final chart looks clear
Check answer
After those two candles have formed A confirmation rule cannot use later candles before they exist. Delaying the label avoids look-ahead bias.
