Volume, tick volume and profiles
Before reading a big volume bar, ask where its data came from. A broker’s tick count is not the whole forex market.
Identify what a volume dataset actually measures.
Traded volume counts completed transactions in specified units at a venue. Tick volume counts recorded price updates under a provider's method. Retail OTC forex has no single consolidated global volume tape, so your broker's activity is a partial view.
A volume profile groups measured activity by price over a selected interval. Its largest node and chosen value area depend on source, period, bin size and calculation. A tick-based profile is not suddenly global traded volume because it is plotted horizontally.
Currency futures volume can provide another market view, but contracts, participants and trading hours differ from a spot dealer's product. Record the exact symbol and feed. Treat historical high activity as context, not proof that future orders wait there.
Let’s use numbers · hypothetical example
Two hypothetical feeds show 1,200 and 2,000 ticks for the same hour. Those are update counts under different feeds, not proof that one captured a fixed share of all global trades. Do not add them as independent global volume.
Keep in mind
Profiles can change when the selected start or end changes. Historical concentration does not guarantee support.
Your turn
Write the venue, units, timeframe and coverage limits for one chart's volume indicator.
A quick check before we move on

- Only when shown as a profile
- No, it reflects that feed's recorded activity
- Yes, all brokers share one tape
Check answer
No, it reflects that feed's recorded activity The display format does not expand the dataset's market coverage.
